My prowess as a photographer during last night's lunar eclipse was not quite equal to capturing the main event. However a somewhat lesser human achievement is here recorded.

- Stephen Wikner
- Sometime performing arts and cathedral administrator, for the past ten years Stephen Wikner has been an Oblate of the Order of St Benedict at the Abbey of Our Lady and St John, Alton, Hants. Born in Egypt in the reign of King Farouk, he lived in Germany (during the chancellorship of Konrad Adenauer) and Malta (while Dom Mintoff was prime minister) before becoming a chorister at Canterbury Cathedral (during the latter years of the 'Red Dean', Hewlett Johnson). Having trained as a musician at the Royal College of Music in London and at the Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester, New York he played for six years as an orchestral violinist. From 1979 he successively managed the Scottish Baroque Ensemble, the London Mozart Players and (from 1987) the South African National Orchestra before becoming Artistic Director of the Transvaal Philharmonic and Natal Philharmonic Orchestras. In 1994 he managed elements of the presidential inauguration ceremonies of Nelson Mandela. Having completed his novitiate at Alton Abbey, in 2001 Stephen Wikner was appointed Bursar at Ely Cathedral where he remained for five years. He returns to Alton Abbey at the end of June 2007.

Nicely atmospheric...
BTW, slightly "off topic" - I know from your profile that you're the Bursar of Ely Cathedral, but are you also a cleric? My scanty knowledge of Anglican Orders is gleaned from Trollope's excellent tales, so there is a huge amount of room for improvement!
Correction, I was bursar of Ely Cathedral between mid 2001 and mid 2006. (I have amended my profile because, as originally posted, it was misleading.) Your reference to Trollope is an interesting one because, although some of the detail of what goes on has changed as indeed have some aspects of cathedral governance, what Trollope has to say about the people associated with these places remains essentially relevant. If I were to tell you I'm busy with a book on the subject (fiction of course) the word 'busy' would be misleading but this magnum opus is under way. No I am not a cleric. The somewhat colourful nature of my marital past (quite rightly) stood in the way of any such aspirations.
Oooh... maybe I need to re-read the books then!!
(And let us know when the Magnum Opus is due for publication!!)
